Ah, Switzerland— the allure is undeniable. For me, the mere mention conjures images of towering peaks, pristine snowscapes, delectable food (mostly cheese), and a sense of adventure that beckons travelers from around the globe. And, nestled amidst the Alps lies a place that epitomizes all that is magical about this alpine wonderland—Jungfraujoch, also known as "The Top of Europe." As a mountain enthusiast, I've always been drawn to the allure of the Alps. But let's face it, not all of us are cut out for wielding ice axes and crampons like seasoned mountaineers. Thankfully, Jungfraujoch offers a way to experience the majesty of the Swiss Alps without the need for the extreme.

What is Jungfraujoch?

Jungfraujoch is more than just a place—it's a full high altitude experience. Located in the heart of the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland, at the saddle of two iconic peaks (Jungfrau and Mönch), Jungfraujoch is Europe's highest railway station. While Jungfraujoch is the highest accessible point in Europe, Jungfrau is also the name of both the 4,158 meter peak it is situated under and the name of the region.

Getting There: A Journey Through Alpine Splendor

Part of this experience is taking the iconic railway that meanders through literal mountains to reach Jungfraujoch.

From Grindelwald Terminal, we took the new Eiger Express which is the most modern tricable gondola in the world. With views of the north face of the Eiger, we floated from Grindelwald to the Eiger Glacier station in just 15 minutes. This is where you board the Jungfrau railway which will take you to “the top of Europe!”

Alternatively, you can head to the Interlaken Ost station. Here, you can board the Bernese Oberland Railway to Lauterbrunnen (Grindelwald Terminal). You can learn more about how to get there here.

Arriving at the Top: Awe-Inspiring Views Await

After boarding the train and about 1 hour and 30 minutes, we arrived at Jungfraujoch, where we were greeted with panoramic vistas of the Swiss Alps. Awaiting at "The Top of Europe" are views of UNESCO World Heritage Site Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch and guaranteed snow and ice 365 days a year.

Views of the Aletsch glacier and Mittelland can be seen from the observation deck, located at the Sphinx Observatory, which also offers 360-degree views of the surrounding mountains, including the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau peaks. It’s hard to explain the vastness of this place, and how tiny it makes you feel.

Standing on the Jungfraujoch 3,454 meters above sea level, you can feel it with your first step: this is a once-in-a-lifetime trip.

Winter in Summer

Like I mentioned, there is guaranteed snow 365 days a year! That said, when we departed for Grindelwald Terminal, it was a beautiful, warm summer day in the valley. My biggest suggestion: layers! When I got to the top, I ended up in a winter jacket, beanie, gloves, and long pants— a far cry from the shorts and t-shirt I was wearing in Grindelwald that morning.

But the adventure doesn't stop at the views! Jungfraujoch is home to a variety of attractions and activities that cater to visitors of all ages. Step inside the Ice Palace, where shimmering ice sculptures and intricate ice carvings create a magical winter wonderland. Visit the Lindt Swiss Chocolate Heaven, the highest chocolate shop in Europe, and indulge in a sweet treat while taking in the stunning views.

For those seeking adventure, the Snow Fun Park offers a range of activities, including sledding, snow tubing, and even skiing and snowboarding in the summer months. And for a truly unique experience, take a ride on the Tyrolienne (Zipline), which glides above the glacier, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

Savoring Swiss Cuisine: A Culinary Delight at High Altitude

After a day of adventure, why not treat yourself to a delicious meal at one of Jungfraujoch's restaurants? Whether you're craving traditional Swiss cuisine or international fare, there's something for everyone. I enjoyed a hearty raclette with views of the surrounding peaks and samples of gourmet dishes made with locally sourced ingredients. Paired with a lunch beer, it was the perfect meal after adventuring in the alpine.

Where to Stay

I cannot recommend staying in Grindelwald enough— it was exactly what you hope for when visiting Switzerland. The kindest people, cows roaming pastures with bells, and a river meandering through hills with towering peaks as a backdrop.

Every alpine adventure deserves a cozy and restful mountain refuge to rejuvenate weary limbs after a day filled with exploration. Surrounded by epic mountains, the Bergwelt Grindelwald Hotel is the epitome of luxury and the Swiss experience. Following a day of traversing Jungfraujoch's wonders, guests can find solace in the Fire and Ice Spa—a haven boasting a textile steam bath, refreshing pools, an invigorating ice fountain, and a pleasant relaxation area enveloped by a hygge-inspiring fireplace. These unique comforts surpassed any other hotel spa experiences I've encountered.

A handful of other hotels are nestled into the valley, boasting views of the mountains and amenities that are sure to satiate your Swiss dreams.
